League All-Star Coaching and Player Selection Bylaws

Family Day All-Stars – Minor and Major Divisions – Each team’s players will vote for either two or three players from their team to represent at the Family Day All-Star games. As long as team numbers stay at 12 or below each team will select 3 players. The players selected will automatically be nominated for the National tournament(All-Star) at the end of the season. These players are not automatically a participant on the National Tournament team however they are nominated to be voted on by the managers at a later date.
Family Day All-Star Coaches – The first and second place managers will be the head coach of the respective teams. We encourage all head coaches to join the team on the field and participate.
Teams will be divided 1st, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th on one side and 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th on the other side. In the case of 12 teams the 11th place team will go to one side and the 12th place team will go to the other side.
All players will play equal time or as close to it as possible. No player may pitch more than one inning. No extra innings will occur if the game is tied at completion. This is a showcase game and a tie would be great.
National Tournament Team selection – Commonly called Traveling All-Stars
Southern Little League is divided in to two geographical areas described in the boundary section on the website and managed by Little League Baseball Inc. These boundaries are strict. Each team will carry 13 players on their roster with the exception of Senior League which will carry up to 16 players.
Divisions – Minors - 9 and 10-year-old – Southern East and Southern West – In some cases 8 year olds.
11 year old – Southern East and Southern West – In some cases 10 year olds.
Majors – 11 and 12 year olds – Southern East and Southern West.
                        Juniors – 13 and 14 Year olds – Southern East/West combined.
                        Seniors – 15 and 16 year olds – Southern East/West combined

For Minors and Majors the Family Day All Stars are automatically nominated to the ballot and will be properly divided by East and West. The managers of each team will be asked if they want to nominate any additional players. The Junior League/Senior League coaches will nominate players from their team to the ballot. Once all nominations are in and ballots are sorted by East and West a meeting will be held. Each manager (coach if manager cannot attend) will have a couple of minutes to talk about his/her players and describe the players strengths etc. After that process each manager will vote for 13 players. When the ballots are tallied the top 13 vote getters will be elected to the National Tournament Team. If after the initial vote there are ties so that we cannot get to 13 the All-Star manager will sit with the directors to break the tie and finalize the roster. If the director has a son/daughter in consideration he/she will recuse themselves and another director will sit in.
Note: 10 year olds in the Major division will automatically be placed on the Minor ballot.
11 year old division – At the conclusion of the Major division selection the 11 year olds who were not elected to the Major All Star team will automatically be placed on the 11 year old ballot. The managers will be asked to nominate additional 11 year olds. The managers will then follow the same voting process to select the two 11 year old teams. NOTE: There are times with the 11 year old teams where we have to make calls to secure enough players for two teams. We will be flexible if that is the case and work with the team manager and coaches to finalize the teams. We are not allowed to combine East and West in any division Majors and below. We have already applied for and been turned down for a waiver.
In Senior League because there is no mandatory play in the National Tournament they will select 16 players. The final 3 to 4 players will be selected by the manager and directors and will most likely be pitchers and catchers. The committee will be responsible for selecting this team.
Notes: In the case of a player not being able to play for any reason the manager along with the directors will replace that player with any player in the respective division. We do ask each regular season manager to try to get a commitment from those nominated. Each All-Star player will be asked to pay an additional fee. The fee for 2018 will be $60. This fee helps to cover uniforms, umpires, balls, and tournament fees.

Selection of team Managers and coaches – The first place Manager will be given the first chance to be the manager of the All Star team. If there is a tie the directors will vote to break that tie. We will then go down the list in order of finish until all managers are selected. Coaches for the All Star teams will then be selected. The manager will have his/her choice of selecting one of his/hers regular season coaches and another manager from another team. If we have gone thru the list of managers and are still short any managers we will then go thru the list of assistant coaches in the same order as noted above.

Senior League Baseball – Due to the short season and players still playing High School Ball the manager and coaches of the Tournament team will be selected by the committee. In Senior League the committee along with the tournament manager will finalize the selection of the players.

2018 Rosters

Parents, please verify that your child appears in the roster for the appropriate league.

Every year we have a few random clerical errors, so if you don't see your child in the appropriate league, please look through the other leagues before contacting the webmaster. If you don't see your child on any of these rosters, or if there's a typo in your child's name, don't worry. It's usually a simple thing to sort out. Contact the webmaster, and we'll get you squared away.

Also keep in mind that these rosters are continuously updated. You won't receive an email each time we update the rosters, but these links will always take you to the very latest updates.

Summer 2018
Fall 2017

We assign players to teams based on age for Fall Ball. Fall Ball is a league for the players to get extra games in so they get more experience for next season. It is much less competitive than the regular season. Even though it is called Minors, Majors, Juniors, etc. we divide the players up by age. Over the past few years we have found this system works much better with the limited amount of teams in Fall Ball.

2018 Tryout Schedule

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE NOTE

First off, keep in mind that the term "tryout" here is a bit of a misnomer. It's actually more of an evaluation to help determine the appropriate league for each child. No one is omitted from participation based on this evaluation. We use the term "tryout" regardless, so bear with us.

To determine your child's official Little League Age, use the online age calculator here. Please use ONLY this official Little League age when considering which tryout session to attend.

All of the time slots listed below are for baseball only. There will not be a softball tryout session this year.

Please notice that only kids in certain situations need to come to tryouts. Read the conditions below carefully. If you find that your child does not fit into any of these situations, then there's no need to come to tryouts. Get it? If you're still not sure, you can contact the director.

Here is the schedule for tryouts:
  • Date: Saturday, March 24th
  • Location: East Grand Rapids High School Gym.
  • Please plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time slot.
  • These times are subject to change. We will announce all changes on the website and email all subscribers. Sign up for email notification here.
  • 9:00am-10:00am: all 9 yr olds (baseball). If you have a league-age 8 year old who wants to move up to Minors, they must attend tryouts with the 9 year olds. No exceptions. No 8 year olds will be placed in the Minors if they do not attend this tryout. There is no guarantee any 8 year old will be placed in the Minors until all of the 9 thru 11 year olds are placed. There is a limit of one 8 year old per Minors team.
  • 10:30am-11:30am: all 10 yr olds (baseball) who were not in the Majors last year and who wish to try out for Majors this year. Also, any 10 yr olds (baseball) who are new to Southern this year must attend at this time. (For 10-yr-olds who were in Minors last year and want to play in Minors again this year, you do not need to attend the tryout.)
  • 12:00pm-1:00pm: all 11 and 12 yr olds (baseball) who were not in the Majors last year
  • 1:00pm-2:00pm: all 13 and 14 yr olds (baseball) who were not in the Juniors last year
  • 2:00pm-2:30pm: umpire sign-up and meeting. Details here.
It is mandatory that all players that will be entering a division or the draft be evaluated. We have three options for you.
  • You must be at your assigned time on Saturday, March 24, to be evaluated.
  • If you have a conflict at that time, you must contact the league director and make arrangements to be at the evaluations at a different time on Saturday March 24.
  • In case of emergency or other unforeseen conflict, a parent or guardian of the player must call the league director and give a detailed evaluation over the phone to the director.
If none of these three options is completed, then the following will apply:
  • If the player is 11 or under and trying out for Majors, the player will be placed in Minors automatically.
  • If the player is 12 in Majors or any age in Juniors, the player will not be drafted but will be randomly placed on a team after the draft is completed.
If you have any questions or concerns, or if you know your child will not be able to attend, please contact the director.

Teams will be divided by age as follows:
6 and 7 year olds
8 and 9 year olds
10 and 11 year olds

6 and 7 will play coach pitch. 8 and 9 will play kid pitch as that is where they will have to play in the spring.

GAMES WILL START THIS SUNDAY AUGUST 27 SO PLEASE BE PREPARED TO PLAY. TIMES WILL BE  1, 3 AND 5. Schedules will be out by Thursday.

Lastly we have more teams than in the past. If you are contacted to coach a team please volunteer as we are in need of coaches to finish organizing teams. We will be emailing today or this evening.

Thank You, Southern Volunteers!

Southern's Seniors Capture State Championship!

Southern's senior baseball all-star team won the Michigan State Championship on Monday night with an exciting 13-3 win over a very good Taylor Northwest Little League team. Taylor defeated Southern 9-4 earlier in the day, forcing the final game last night. Luke Elzinga pitched a complete game in the final allowing three runs on only five hits in front of possibly the largest crowd ever to watch a game on Henwood field.

Also at Southern last night, Southern's east 9/10 all-star team defeated Holland and then moved over to the Henwood field to cheer on the Seniors. The atmosphere was electric as Taylor cut in to a 5-0 lead to make it 5-3 in the top of the 4th. Southern responded with a run in the bottom of the 4th to make it 6-3 and stall Taylor’s momentum. In the bottom of the 6th Southern finished it off with 6 runs for the 13-3 mercy rule win.

Congratulations to the team, coaches, parents and supporters. Good luck to the Senior Baseball team as they head to Peru, Illinois, for the Central States Senior League Baseball Tournament. That action starts Saturday with a two day seeding pool play. Southern plays Kentucky on Saturday at 2:30 and Ohio on Sunday at 2:00 central time. All teams are then seeded and advance to a 9 team single elimination bracket starting Sunday evening for the 8 and 9 seeds and Monday for the 1 thru 7 seeds. We will keep you posted here with the results. We will also let you know if you can follow online.

Congratulations 2017 Senior Baseball State Champions Southern Little League!!

Did You Know? Southern Offers Fall Ball!

With the summer season in full swing, now is a good time to remind folks that Southern also offers Fall Ball. Fall Ball starts in late August with Sunday afternoon games for eight weeks. With leagues for players in coach pitch, minors, majors, and juniors, it's a great way to keep the summer fun rolling. You may have seen a notice from another league offering fall baseball, but that's only for leagues who don't offer their own fall program. We'll send out signup information in July, so stay tuned for more information on Southern Fall Ball.

Grill Volunteers Needed for Family Day

Saturday is Family Day, and we still need volunteers to take a turn at the grill. Click here to sign up.

Please Note: This is separate from the volunteer form that each team received. Those forms need to be completed and turned in by Friday.
