Monday night Southern's Seniors Baseball All-Stars overcame a slow start to defeat Indiana 11-2 in their final game of regional pool play. Led by Brendan Boman's 3-hit performance, Southern took control of the game in the 3rd inning and never looked back. That win led to Tuesday night's game for the right to advance to the championship round Wednesday. Zach Correll started on the mound and pitched into the 4th allowing 4 runs. Noah Salasky, Ryan Dayton, and Miles Kuperus combined to pitch the remainder of the game. Southern actually trailed 1-0 going in to the bottom of the 2nd inning before exploding for 7 runs. Zach Corell had 2 RBIs, Casey Horjus had an RBI double, and Noah Salasky had a 2-RBI double. Ryan Dayton cleared the bases with a double, and Joel Dayton hit a 2-run home run en-route to a 15-5 mercy rule victory in 5 innings.
The final pairings are in for Wednesday, and Southern plays Madison, WI, at 4:00pm. The other semi-final game features Ohio playing Chicago, IL. The two semi-final winners will face off at 7:30pm Wednesday night for the championship and the right to advance to the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine. Southern Manager Chris Lamange said, "We are in good shape with our pitching. Sam Jansen, Joel Dayton, Mason Banbury, Casey Horjus, and Jared Bulthuis are all available to pitch tomorrow.
If Southern wins this tournament it would be the first time since 1976 that a Southern Senior League team has made it to the World Series. Good Luck to the Southern Senior All-Stars tomorrow in Peru, Illinois!
