Change in Fall Baseball Minors Schedule

We made a mistake in the Fall Baseball Minors schedule. We mistakenly had scheduled a double-header between McIntyre and Conway on Sunday, October 6. This has been corrected to show a single game between McIntyre and Conway at 3pm, followed by a single game between Hall and Kuzner at 5pm. The online schedule has been updated.

The schedules for baseball Majors, Minors, and Coach-Pitch are now online. Click the Schedules link on the right sidebar. Baseball Juniors and Softball schedules will be online as soon as possible. We'll make another announcement once those are available. Thanks for your patience.

Register Now for Fall Ball

It's time to think about Fall Ball again!
  • Fall baseball will be for ages 7-14.
  • This is a fun and instructional season. There are no practices, and we don't keep standings.
  • The 7-8 age group will play coach pitch. The 9-10 age group and the 11-12 age group will play on the East and West small fields. Ages 13-14 will play on the Henwood big field.
  • Please note that if you played as an 8-year old in coach pitch this past Summer, you now move up and play in the 9-10 age group for the Fall. If you played as a 10-year-old in the minors this past Summer, you will move up and play as an 11-year-old for the Fall. If you played as a 12-year-old in the majors this Summer, you will play as a 13-year old on the Henwood big field for the Fall. If you played as a 14-year old in the Juniors this past Summer, you continue to play as a 14-year old on the big field for the Fall.
  • The season will start on Sunday, September 8 with the final games on Sunday, October 27.
  • All games will be played on Sunday afternoons at 1:00pm and 3:00pm, with some games at 5:00pm only if required by the number of teams.
  • The cost is $70 and includes a jersey you can keep. This fee helps us cover the costs of umpires, baseballs, etc.
  • Please note: You must live within Southern's official boundaries to be eligible to participate in Fall ball. The only exception is if you used to live within the boundaries while playing baseball at Southern, you continue to qualify. If this is too confusing or if you're hoping for an exception, please contact Bob.
  • You can sign up online here. To help us organize teams, recruit coaches and order shirts, we ask that you please sign up online as soon as possible.
  • The deadline for signing up is Sun-1-Sep.
  • If you have any questions contact:
    Bob Hams, league director (bhams@roofmelt.com)
  • We need coaches! Please contact Bob if you are interested in coaching. (No full teams will be allowed this year so we can achieve an even competitive balance.)

Southern Seniors Baseball All-Stars Finish in the Region

On Wednesday evening Southern's Seniors Baseball All-Stars played Wisconsin in the regional semifinals. After trailing 4-2 much of the game the team rallied for 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning for an exciting comeback win. That win advanced the team to the finals at 7:30pm Wednesday night against Illinois. Illinois jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. Southern cut that lead to 5-3 and put the pressure on Illinois. In the end Illinois rallied for a couple more and a 7-3 victory.

The Southern Seniors Baseball All-Stars had a great tournament run. A district championship, a sectional championship, a state championship and 2nd place in the 9 state regional tournament. The players, coaches, and families represented Southern in high fashion and were great ambassadors. The only all Southern all-star team to make it further was the 1976 Seniors All-Star team. The 2002 Seniors made it to the regionals also. It takes a special group to accomplish what this group did, and everyone involved with Southern is very proud of all of you.

Congratulations on a great run!!!

Southern Seniors Storm Back to Advance to Regional Final Four

Zach Corell, starting pitcher
Monday night Southern's Seniors Baseball All-Stars overcame a slow start to defeat Indiana 11-2 in their final game of regional pool play. Led by Brendan Boman's 3-hit performance, Southern took control of the game in the 3rd inning and never looked back. That win led to Tuesday night's game for the right to advance to the championship round Wednesday. Zach Correll started on the mound and pitched into the 4th allowing 4 runs. Noah Salasky, Ryan Dayton, and Miles Kuperus combined to pitch the remainder of the game. Southern actually trailed 1-0 going in to the bottom of the 2nd inning before exploding for 7 runs. Zach Corell had 2 RBIs, Casey Horjus had an RBI double, and Noah Salasky had a 2-RBI double. Ryan Dayton cleared the bases with a double, and Joel Dayton hit a 2-run home run en-route to a 15-5 mercy rule victory in 5 innings.

The final pairings are in for Wednesday, and Southern plays Madison, WI, at 4:00pm. The other semi-final game features Ohio playing Chicago, IL. The two semi-final winners will face off  at 7:30pm Wednesday night for the championship and the right to advance to the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine. Southern Manager Chris Lamange said, "We are in good shape with our pitching. Sam Jansen, Joel Dayton, Mason Banbury, Casey Horjus, and Jared Bulthuis are all available to pitch tomorrow.

If Southern wins this tournament it would be the first time since 1976 that a Southern Senior League team has made it to the World Series. Good Luck to the Southern Senior All-Stars tomorrow in Peru, Illinois!

Police Report Update

Southern Little League Parents,

After further investigation by the Grand Rapids Police Department, new information has been reported. The car involved in the incident was not a dark colored sedan, it was a white sedan, nice, possibly a Kia. There was a woman in the passenger seat and what the player said appeared to be 2 to 3 children in the back seat. He assumes it was a family.

We hope you will all continue to be vigilant with the safety of all of the players at Southern and continue to keep Southern a safe and fun environment as it has been for 60 years.

Bob Hams
President, Southern Little League

Alert to Parents

Good Morning All Southern Little League Parents,

An incident was reported to us that happened on Saturday, May 11, at Southern and the JC Park. A Caucasian male driving a newer model dark colored sedan stopped his vehicle and tried to persuade one of our 11 year old baseball players to get in his car so he could help the player find his parents. The player immediately ran to the concession stand and found his mother. A police report has been filed, and the GR Police will patrol more often during games. No other incidents similar to this have been reported in the last 30 days.

Southern is a great place for the community and is safe as long as we all keep an eye out for suspicious activity. Let’s all keep Southern a great place for the area youth to enjoy!

Bob Hams
President, Southern Little League

Details from Police Report

  • Description: white male with brown hair, possibly in his 40's, wearing a gray shirt.
  • Car: white 4-door possibly a Kia model

Saturday is Picture Day

Sat-11-May is picture day.
  • Each team has been given a specific time slot for pictures, and by now your coach or team parent should have contacted you about what time you need to be there. If not, please contact your team parent for details.
  • There's also an opportunity for players to have individual pictures taken.
  • Even if you're not planning on purchasing a team or individual photo, as a courtesy to others on the team, please make sure your child is present for the team picture anyhow.
  • Pictures are taken over near the Mackay Jaycee soccer fields, under the pavilion in the woods, near the playground.
  • They run a tight ship, so be on time for your team's scheduled slot.
  • RAIN OR SHINE! Regardless of any possible weather-related game cancellations, picture day will go on as scheduled.

Coaches: Soft Toss Into Fences

There is absolutely NO soft toss allowed with hard softballs or baseballs in to the fences at the city JC fields or the Southern fields. The city called yesterday and observed one of our teams doing that Monday night at JC fields. Joe Malewitz has had to ask 3 teams/coaches not to do it at Southern. It ruins the fences.

The "Team Parent" is the one parent on each team who has volunteered to help the coach organize the team's picture day, raffle sales, snack schedule, etc.) Topics will include picture day, raffle, sponsors, concession stand volunteers and general operating information for the 2013 season. We appreciate your attendance as this is the most important meeting of the year for organizational purposes.

Games Start This Week!

The season begins this Friday, April 19, with a full slate of baseball games in Majors, Minors, and 78ers. Just a reminder that you can always see a combine schedule of all games at Southern coming up in the next week by clicking on the This Week at Southern link on the right sidebar.

New Umpire Training Session Dates and Time

All new 13-15 year old umpires must attend ONE of two scheduled training sessions before umpiring any minor league games this upcoming season at Southern. Any returning umpire is welcome as well but is not required to attend a session. The first session is scheduled for this Saturday, April 13, at 8:30 am. The second session is scheduled for this Sunday, April 14, at 8:30 am. Each of these sessions will go on rain or shine, last an hour and a half or less, and be conducted by Southern's umpire director, Jim Weiss. Plan on meeting Jim at the equipment shed/maintenance building which is located in the rear of Southern's complex and behind the minors and majors fields.

Call Jim at 520-1306 for any additional questions or bits of information regarding these sessions.

We've gotten some calls asking whether or not the tryout session on Saturday, March 23, includes softball players. It does not.
