Correction to Fall Majors/Minors Schedule

The Fall Majors/Minors schedule posted yesterday contained an error that we have now corrected and shaded orange on the schedule.
  • On September 21, the 1:00pm Henkey vs Horjus game and the 3:00pm McCulloch vs Rohen game on the west field have been switched.
As a rule, whenever we make a change or correction to a schedule, we always announce it via email to make sure everyone knows. That means some of you might receive schedule change announcements for leagues not of interest to you. But hopefully you can understand the importance of notifying players, families, umpires and volunteers about schedule changes.

Big-League All-Stars Now 2-1 Play Tonight

The District 9 Big League baseball team returns to action tonight (Thursday) at 7:30pm against the South team from Greenville, SC. After suffering a tough loss against the West on field 3 which is only 300 feet all around, (D-9 and the Southwest were the only two U.S. teams to play 2 games on this field) District 9 has no way of advancing to the finals round, even though they could be 3 and 1. With this scenario already determined it has not lowered the spirits of the D-9 team, as they will decide who gets in the U.S. final with tonight's game. The game will be broadcast live on the radio and you can access the link by going to bigleagueworldseries.org.
Interesting note: Total runs scored per game on field 1 (Stadium) 7.3. Total runs scored per game on field 3 - 18.0. Tiebreaker: total runs allowed divided by innings played.

District 9 Big Leaguers Move to 2-0

District 9 Big Leaguers are now 2-0 with an impressive win over the East representative New Jersey. Kyle Schepel (GR Christian) was the starting hurler for D-9. He threw six innings allowing one unearned run in the first inning. Schepel struck out twelve in the impressive outing. Alex Beelen(Holland Christian) got the save when D-9 doubled off a runner on first with a 6-4-3 double play. JD Corey (West Catholic) and Tommy Okke (Union and GRCC) both homered in the game. JD Corey now has eight RBI's in the two games. Mike Slagter also doubled to knock in a run and then went on to score. It was a cool 101 degrees at game time, however a cold front is coming through and it should be around 96 at game time today.

District 9 continues action today at 4:00pm versus the West team from Anaheim, CA. Stay tuned to bigleagueworldseries.org for all of the action. Today's game is scheduled to be broadcast live on the bigleagueworldseries.org website.

Big Leaguers Win First World Series Game

District 9 Big League Baseball played it's first game Saturday against the Southwest(Louisiana) and won 12 to 7. Cody Westerhuis was the starting pitcher followed by 4 more pitchers with Tommy Okke getting the save in the 7th with a 1,2,3 inning. Back to back home runs in the 6th inning proved to be the final blow to a Louisiana team that had several very good hitters and would not throw in the towel. JD Corey led the inning off with a solo blast to make it 11 to 7, and with a new pitcher in for the Southwest, Kyle Schepel followed with another solo blast. Tommorrow is a day off for District 9, with the next game set for 4:00pm Monday against the East from New Jersey. Stay tuned to bigleagueworldseries.org for all of the action.

Small Schedule Correction for Minors Baseball

We recently discovered a typo in the Minor League Baseball schedule for Family Day, June 7. The schedule had mistakenly shown Vulpetti vs. Sayfie at 8:00PM. This was incorrect. The correct time for this game is 8:00AM. The schedule has been corrected and the change is shaded orange. We apologize for any inconvenience.

As a rule, whenever we make a change or correction to a schedule, we always announce it via email to make sure everyone knows. That means some of you might receive schedule change announcements for leagues not of interest to you. But hopefully you can understand the importance of notifying players, families, umpires and volunteers about schedule changes.

Schedule Change for Seniors Baseball

We have recently discovered a scheduling error for this week in Senior League Baseball. The games were originally scheduled for Tue-3-Jun. This was incorrect. The correct date for these games is Mon-2-Jun. The changes are shaded orange in the schedule. We apologize for the inconvenience and the short notice.

As a rule, whenever we make a change or correction to a schedule, we always announce it via email to make sure everyone knows. That means some of you might receive schedule change announcements for leagues not of interest to you. But hopefully you can understand the importance of notifying players, families, umpires and volunteers about schedule changes.

Softball Minors and Majors Schedules Finalized

The schedules for softball Minors and Majors are now complete and available on the schedules page. The softball Juniors schedule is not finalized yet. As soon as it is, we will post it and announce it.

Softball Majors and Juniors will be entered in the District 9 Team Tournament. Southern will be scheduling a tournament for the softball Minors after June 14. Steve Parks will have details on the softball Minors tournament in the next week or so.

Schedule Change for Majors VanScoyk and Danhof May 23

At the request of the coaches involved, we have made a change to the schedule for the Major league on May 23. The changes are shaded orange below and on the schedule.

As a rule, whenever we make a change or correction to a schedule, we always announce it via email to make sure everyone knows. That means some of you might receive schedule change announcements for leagues not of interest to you. But hopefully you can understand the importance of notifying players, families, umpires and volunteers about schedule changes.

More News for Softball Players and Parents

We have struck a deal to play interleague play in softball with Pinery Park again this year. Sorry it took so long. The schedule posted yesterday for this weekend has been updated to reflect these two changes:
  • The Minors game originally scheduled for Mon-12-May has been canceled because the new Minor schedule that will come out will start on Monday May 12.
  • The following game has been added: Fri-9-May at 7:15 on the JC East field the Southern Majors will play one of the Pinery Park teams.
John Edgerle (District Administrator) will have the schedules completed in the next day or two so we can post them, but the Majors will play Friday whether schedules are done or not. Please check back soon for updates.

The Junior softball schedule will not start for a couple of weeks. However, we are scheduling a couple of games next week with another league and will notify the coach soon.

Thank you again for your patience in this matter.

Small Schedule Corrections

We have detected and corrected a number of small errors on the schedules. So if you have printed out your schedule already, you may want to hold off on re-printing until nearer to the start of the season, in case the schedules are tweaked again. In general, it's always best to rely on the website for the most up-to-date schedule information rather than on a printed copy. Once the season starts, we will never change the schedule without making an announcement here about it.

Also, apologies to those of you still waiting for schedules for Juniors and Seniors baseball as well as for all levels of softball. The softball schedules are given to us by the district, and we do not expect to receive them until the third week of April. We will post these just as soon as we possibly can.

Coaches Reservations Page Updated

Coaches, we now have reservations for the two new batting cages at Southern up and running. You can access the reservations page for these via the Coaches page.

Schedules Posted for Majors, Minors and 78ers Baseball

The season schedules for the Majors, Minors and 78ers baseball have been posted. You can visit them here. You can always see the schedules by clicking the Schedules link along the top banner of the website. We still do not have schedules for Softball or for Juniors and Seniors Baseball. We will post these as soon as they become available.

This year, we're trying something new in an attempt to automate the standings. After each game, we'll be asking the coaches to phone in the score of the game. The webmaster will add the score of each game to the schedule page. So you can check back on the schedule page for your league to see game scores as the season progresses. The standings will be automatically generated from these scores. So if the coaches are diligent about calling in scores, the standings will be up to date too.

Coaches Reservations Page Updated

Attention Coaches: (Sorry everybody else, you can ignore this message. It's for coaches only, and this is the only way we can reach them all.)

We have updated the Coaches page. You can now reserve practice fields at Southern little League (only thru April 17) as well as at Lakeside Elementary School. Please email the webmaster for your password:

Rescheduled Clean-up Day is This Saturday

It finally looks like the weather is good enough for us to reschedule our clean-up day. If you can make it, please plan to come out to Southern Little League on Saturday, April 5th. We realize that many of you will be traveling for Spring Break, but we're hoping to have enough volunteers in town to clear away the leaves and other debris from the fields. We plan to get started at 10:00am. Please bring an extra rake if you have one. We're hoping to be done with the work by 1:00pm. So come out and pitch in!

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Boys 9-12 Sign-ups are Closed

Clean-up Day has been Canceled

Because of the persistent wintry weather, we have decided to cancel the clean-up day this Saturday. If we reschedule it, we'll make sure to let everybody know. Happy shoveling!

We need volunteers. The day will begin at 9:00 am. All help is greatly appreciated. Bring an extra rake if you have one. Also, please make a note that if it is canceled due to the weather, it will be posted on the website. So come out and pitch in!

2008 Tryout Schedule

First off, keep in mind that the term "tryout" here is a bit of a misnomer. It's actually more of an evaluation to help determine the appropriate league for each child. No one is omitted from participation based on this evaluation. We use the term "tryout" regardless, so bear with us.

To determine your child's official Little League Age, use their online age calculator here. Please use ONLY this official Little League age when considering which tryout session to attend.

If you have not shown your child's birth certificate at sign-up, please make sure to bring it along to the tryout.

Please notice that only kids in certain situations need to come to tryouts. Read the conditions below carefully. If you find that your child does not fit into one of these situations, then there's no need to come to tryouts. Get it?

Here is the schedule for tryouts: (Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time slot.)
  • Date: Saturday, March 22nd
  • Location: East Grand Rapids High School Gym (the arrow on this map points right at the door where you should enter)
  • 9:00am-10:00am: all 9 yr olds
  • 10:30am-11:30am: all 10 yr olds who were not in the majors last year
  • 12:00pm-1:00pm: all 11 and 12 yr olds who were not in the majors last year
  • 1:30pm-2:30pm: all 13 and 14 yr olds who were not in the juniors last year
  • 2:30pm-3:30pm: all 9 and 10 yr old girls playing softball
  • 2:30pm-3:00pm: umpire sign-up and meeting
If you have any questions or concerns, or if you know your child will not be able to attend, please contact the director.

Please do us a favor and encourage others you may know to sign up soon. The sooner we get an idea of the number of signups, the sooner we can start organizing the tryout and the coaching.

For those of you who have not signed up for the 2008 season yet, we've added one more in-person sign-up session this Saturday, March 8, from 10am to noon. The overall deadline is still March 15. What Are You Waiting For?

If you've already signed up for 2008, THANKS! You can safely ignore this message. If you have not signed up yet, please read on.....

Last year about 700 kids signed up to play at Southern. So far this year we're still below 500. So that means more than 200 of you continue to procrastinate. If you could take a few minutes to sign up online sooner than later, it would help us out a lot.
  • If we have to send out reminder postcards in the mail, that costs a LOT of money and ends up raising prices for everyone.
  • The sooner we know how many kids there are, the sooner we can plan for coaches and schedules.
  • If you register soon, you can guarantee a spot. Waiting until after the March 15 deadline will put your spot at risk.
  • Even if there is still room after the deadline, the price goes up to $125.
Convinced yet? Don't put it off. Do us a favor and sign up online now by clicking here. All the other details you need to know are here.

Reserving Practice Fields (Coaches Only)

You can reserve slots for the batting cages and the various practice fields here.

Please read these very important instructions before you sign up:
  • Please limit your reservations as indicated on the signup system. Please don't make us get ugly about enforcing this. And don't be clever by using multiple different names to reserve for the same team. Clever abusers of this system will be banned for the entire season. If you see others violating this limit, please contact the webmaster.
  • Use your real name for making reservations. Only the head coach may make these reservations, not an assistant coach. Any reservations made with a name that does not match one of our active head coaches will be deleted without warning.
  • In the past, coaches have signed up for the same slots for the entire season, which was not fair to latecomers and encouraged coaches to sign up for slots they ended up not using. So we have been forced to open up slots a couple weeks at a time to prevent this. Once everyone has a crack at slots in the current 2-week period, we'll open up the next 2-week period, etc.
  • Once the season begins, batting cage reservations are no longer required. Instead, we assume that the teams playing games will be able to share the batting cages during the 90 minutes before their games begin.
  • If you are unable to use your reservation, please cancel it so others can sign up for that slot.
  • If you have any questions about the reservations system, please contact the webmaster.
  • Now that you have read these instructions, click here to make your reservations for the small fields.
Still looking for the link to make your field reservations? You must not have read the instructions very carefully!

Calling in Scores (Coaches Only)

At the end of each game, one of the coaches needs to call in the score of the game. This is the only way we can track standings accurately. It's easy to do, and we suggest you put this number on your cell phone speed dial so you can just call it in right away after each game. Here's the procedure:
  • We don't keep standings for 78ers or softball, so there is no need to call in scores for those games.
  • Call the Southern Coach's Score Reporting Hotline at 827-7882. Don't worry about calling too late, that number goes straight to voice mail.
  • Clearly state the coach's name, the league, whether you won or lost, and the final score. If you call in on the same date as your game, you don't need to include the date.
  • Here are some examples.
"Coach Johnson from the Major League. We won 6-3."
"Coach Robertson from the Minor League. We lost 5-4."
  • If either team calls in the score, that's fine. There's no need for both coaches to call in. But please make sure one of you actually does it. Better to have both call than neither.
  • Please don't use that hotline for anything else other than calling in scores. For all other issues contact the director or the webmaster.
  • If you neglect to call in your scores, the online schedule will show missing scores, these games won't appear in the standings, and your players will start complaining to you.
  • If you'd rather not call the hotline or if you forget, just email the webmaster.
  • If you're not sure if your score has been called in, just go over to the schedule page for your league and see if the score appears on the schedule. If not, be on the safe side and phone it or email it in.
  • After you phone in the score of your game, it may take a day or so for the webmaster to enter your score into the schedule. As soon as that happens, the game will count and appear in the schedule and in the standings.
  • If you're unsure or if you have any questions or problems, please email the webmaster.

Softball Standings for 2008

  • If you see a discrepancy in the standings, first check the schedule page to see if scores are missing. If scores are missing on the schedule page, contact your coach.
  • If you find this view of the standings inconvenient and would prefer to download it, print it, or view it on its own, you can do that here.
